Shoreditch has always been a place where creativity and industry meet. From designers and architects to artists, makers and independent brands, the area is full of people turning ambitious ideas into something tangible.

For us, that means helping turn creative concepts and digital drawings into finished physical pieces.

While laser cutting is at the heart of what we do, there’s much more to the process than simply loading a file and pressing “go”. A significant part of our work happens before a drawing reaches the laser, with our technical team reviewing and preparing client CAD files to make sure they are suitable for efficient manufacturing.

Simplifying complex CAD drawings

One of the techniques we regularly use is node reduction.

A CAD drawing can look perfectly smooth on screen while containing thousands of individual points, or “nodes”, that define its geometry. This can happen when artwork has been converted from another file format, traced from an image, or created using software that generates more points than are actually needed.

While these extra nodes may not be visible, they can make a drawing unnecessarily complicated for the laser cutter. Instead of following a clean curve, the machine may have to process and move through hundreds or thousands of tiny segments.

Using CAD software such as AutoCAD, our technical team can identify and remove unnecessary nodes, simplifying the geometry while retaining the intended shape and detail of the design.

The result is a cleaner, smoother, and more efficient cutting path.

Saving time and, most importantly, cost

The benefits of simplifying a CAD drawing aren’t just technical. They can save our clients both time and money.

A more efficient cutting path can reduce unnecessary machine movement and processing time, which can make a significant difference on intricate or complex projects. Less machine time means greater production efficiency and, importantly, can help reduce the overall cost of a job.

It also helps reduce the risk of problems during production. By addressing complicated or unsuitable geometry before a file reaches the machine, we can identify potential issues early rather than discovering them halfway through a job.

For clients working on bespoke designs, prototypes, installations or larger production runs, these efficiencies can quickly add up.

The expertise behind the laser

This is one of the reasons we see ourselves as more than just a laser cutting service.

Our technical team understands that a drawing that looks perfect on screen isn’t necessarily ready for manufacture. We consider the geometry, cut paths, tolerances, material and practicalities of fabrication to make sure a design works in the real world.

Sometimes that means making a small adjustment. Other times, it means cleaning up and simplifying a complex drawing or advising on how something could be adapted for manufacture.

The aim is always to preserve the designer’s intention while creating the most efficient route from digital drawing to finished product.

For Shoreditch’s creative community, where projects are often bespoke, experimental and technically challenging, that collaboration can make all the difference.

So, while the laser may be the part of the process you see, there’s a lot of technical expertise happening behind the scenes—helping to turn creative ideas into high-quality finished pieces, while saving our clients valuable time and, most importantly, cost.
