At Swordfish we love supporting local artists and causes, so when we were approached by Romance FC to get involved with the “Playing for Kicks’ annual tournament, it was a perfect match (pardon the pun!).
Romance FC was established in 2012 and is an all female football collective based in East London. The team is a mix of talent from filmmakers, DJ’s, graphic designers and artists.
They describe themselves as a collective building a community through football and creating opportunities for women and non-binary individuals both on and off the pitch. In a recent BBC interview, they said, “Romance FC is not just about football, it’s about being a team. It’s about coming through things together, winning together, losing together, coming up with ideas”.

The idea of a creative collective using their skills to help those around them resonates with us here at Swordfish Works. We like to use our talents for good and our ethos is we always like to help; help solve problems, help with urgent requests and ultimately help clients deliver their projects.
This May sees the return of Spring Kicks – an addition to their September ‘Playing For Kicks’ 5-a-side tournament. The event will launch this May in time for the build-up to the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019. We’re delighted that our Swordfish team will be supporting this event for the 3rd year running, by donating materials, workshop facilities and our time to produce the winning trophies. We’ll also attend the Spring Kicks event and be part of the wrap-up crew at the end.

‘Playing for Kicks’ is for junior teams as well as seniors and so provides an environment for kids to experience the health benefits of sport, both physically and physiologically. We are always particularly thrilled to make the junior trophies, as we know they will be treasured. Often it is the first trophy a junior team has won and is destined to sit proudly on a shelf in a clubhouse or their family home.
We got involved with the design of the trophies at an early stage, making them more stable and suggesting different materials or processes such as gold/silver mirror acrylic for the plaques on the marble bases. We then used additional techniques such as laser engraving and raster engraving with paint filling to make the details more visible.

We think the result is refreshing and exciting compared to the old- fashioned ‘statue’ style trophies of the past.
Momentum is building for women’s football and things are really starting to happen for this East London Collective. Last year they worked with Nike to design their own specific kit – a bold shirt design taking inspiration from classic shirts of the 80’s and 90’s with a fresh take on classic geometric shapes. A custom font for the numbers and colours inspired by evening skies over Hackney Down’s Park where the women train, certainly capture their true spirit.

Romance FC collective are forging ahead and changing things for the better along their journey – don’t miss out and make sure you get some Romance in your life!
